What is mangal dosha, and should you worry about it?

Few astrology words cause as much worry in Indian families as "manglik". Here's what mangal dosha actually means in the tradition, and why it's far more common, and far less scary, than people think.

The definition

Mangal dosha (also kuja dosha) is said to be present when Mars (Mangal) sits in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house of the kundli. Many astrologers check this from the lagna, and also from the Moon and Venus. Someone with it is called manglik.

How common is it?

Very. Six of the twelve houses count, so by a simple count about half of all charts show Mars in one of them from the lagna alone. That's why many astrologers apply the traditional exceptions before calling a chart manglik.

Traditional exceptions (cancellation)

Classical rules list many conditions that are said to cancel or soften it. A few commonly quoted ones:

  • Mars in its own sign (Aries, Scorpio) or exalted (Capricorn).
  • Both partners being manglik, which is traditionally said to balance out.
  • Jupiter's aspect on Mars or on the house concerned.
  • Some schools say its effect eases with age, often quoted as after 28.

Rules differ between schools and regions, so two astrologers can disagree about the same chart.

What it's said to mean

Mars is energy, drive and temper. In the houses above it's traditionally read as needing more patience and compromise in marriage. That's a description of temperament, not a prediction of harm.

Please don't panic

Mangal dosha is one of the most fear-sold ideas in astrology, with expensive pujas and gemstones offered as "cures". You don't need them. If it matters to your family, check both charts together through kundli matching, look at the whole picture, and remember that understanding, respect and communication make a marriage work.
