How to read your birth chart, step by step
A kundli looks like a puzzle at first. Read it in this order and it starts to make sense in about ten minutes.
Step 1: Find the lagna
In a North Indian chart the top-centre diamond is always the 1st house, the lagna. The number written there is the sign rising when you were born (1 = Aries, 2 = Taurus … 12 = Pisces). The lagna sets the frame for the whole chart: it says which sign rules each house.
Step 2: Count the houses
From the lagna, houses run anticlockwise in a North Indian chart. A quick map of what each one covers:
- 1 self, body, temperament · 2 family, speech, savings · 3 courage, siblings, short travel
- 4 home, mother, comfort · 5 children, studies, creativity · 6 work, rivals, health routines
- 7 marriage, partners · 8 change, longevity, hidden matters · 9 luck, father, dharma
- 10 career, status · 11 gains, friends · 12 expenses, foreign lands, rest
Step 3: See where the planets sit
Each graha in a house colours that area of life. Jupiter in the 10th is traditionally read as support for career; Saturn in the 7th as a slower or more serious path to marriage. Note too whether a planet is in its own sign, exalted (strong) or debilitated (weak), and whether it is retrograde (often marked R).
Step 4: Look at the house lords
Every house has a lord: the planet that rules its sign. Where the 10th lord goes, for example, says where career energy flows. This is where reading gets richer, and where most beginners stop at first. That's fine.
Step 5: Check the timing
A chart shows potential; the dasha shows when it is said to play out. Find your current mahadasha and antardasha and read the houses those planets rule and occupy. Add gochar (today's transits), especially Saturn and Jupiter, for the bigger picture.
Common beginner mistakes
- Judging from one planet alone. Astrologers weigh the whole chart.
- Using a wrong birth time. Even 15 minutes can shift the lagna near a sign border.
- Reading "bad" placements as fate. Traditional texts describe tendencies, not sentences.
