Rashi vs lagna: Moon sign, ascendant and Sun sign explained
Ask three people their sign and you may get three kinds of answer. In Vedic astrology, the two that matter most are your rashi and your lagna.
Rashi: your Moon sign
Your rashi is the sign the Moon was in when you were born. In Indian astrology it's the "sign" people usually mean, and it's the one daily horoscopes (rashifal), Sade Sati and the guna milan match are based on. The Moon moves fast, changing sign every two and a half days or so, so your rashi depends on your birth date and, near a changeover, the time.
Lagna: your ascendant
Your lagna is the sign rising on the eastern horizon at your birth. It turns through all 12 signs in a day, roughly two hours each, so it needs an accurate birth time. The lagna is the 1st house and fixes the whole house layout of the kundli, which is why astrologers say it describes your body, nature and the shape of your life.
And the Sun sign?
The Sun sign is the sign the Sun was in. It's what Western horoscopes in magazines use. In Vedic astrology it's calculated in the sidereal zodiac, so it's often one sign earlier than your Western Sun sign. It plays a smaller role than the Moon and lagna.
Which one should I follow?
- Daily horoscope: read it for your rashi (Moon sign).
- Personality and life areas: the lagna and its lord.
- Mind and emotions: the Moon, its rashi and nakshatra.
Some astrologers also read a horoscope from the lagna as a second view. Neither is "wrong": they answer different questions.
Don't know your birth time?
You'll still have a reliable rashi in most cases, and a chart can be made with the Moon as the 1st house. Only the lagna and house-based details stay uncertain.
